While only Nichirin blades can kill a demon, some demon slayers break the mold with their choice of weapon. Here's why - and what he has to say about them.
Mitsuri Kanroji's first action sequence in Demon Slayer's "Swordsmith Village" arc was a beautifully animated expression of her character. Perhaps the most eye-catching feature of her entire sequence is her unique weapon, which takes the form of a ribbon-like extendable blade.

Mitsuri isn't the only Demon Slayer to use a weapon other than the standard Nichirin katana - his compatriot Hashira Tengen Uzui uses double nunchuck-shaped blades, while Genya Shinazugawa, a key player in season 3, uses a firearm in battle that shoots Nichirin Bullets, in combination with a traditional Nichirin katana. While most Demon Slayers in the series equip the katana as their primary weapon, it's clearly not the only acceptable outlet for killing demons. Here's why some Demon Slayers use alternative Nichirin weapons, and what this reveals about their personalities.
Mitsuri Kanroji's Katana shows his artistic sensibility
One of the stars of Demon Slayer's "Swordsmith Village" arc, Love Hashira Mitsuri Kanroji made a name for herself with her unique sword. This blade is probably inspired by the real Indian sword whip called an urumi, and is one of the most distinctive weapons used by any Demon Slayer in the series to date. While still made from the same Nichirin metal of which typical Demon Slayer katanas are composed, Mitsuri's blade is flexible, mobile and can extend several feet. Its flexible nature allows it to be curled up in its sheath and instantly unwrapped with ease.
The urumi is considered one of the world's most difficult weapons to master, and Mitsuri's specialized blade is no different in its degree of difficulty. She has declared in the anime that she is stronger than almost any man she encounters, and her mastery of the sword whip is perfect visual evidence of this. The fact that she uses such a unique and difficult weapon shows her skill, but also demonstrates that she had to train and work painstakingly to reach the level of a Hashira.

The flexibility of the sword's whip is also a perfect match for Mitsuri's fighting style. She moves with grace and elegance, using the whip as an extension of her body much as a dancer or performer would, while somehow retaining the power and efficiency expected of a Hashira in Demon Slayer.
Tengen and Inosuke's unique blades show their different origins
Unlike Mitsuri, the swords of the other Demon Slayers not only reflect their personalities; they are also the product of their individual and unique backgrounds. Take Tengen Uzui, former Sound Hashira and one of the stars of Demon Slayer's "Entertainment District" arc. Tengen uses separate double-bladed Nichirin swords that are linked together by a single chain. Although this weapon functions as a sword in many cases, its thick blade and interconnectivity make it a particularly eye-catching weapon that, when used with his miniature bombs, suits his flashy personality.
Beyond that, Tengen's double blades represent his background as a former shinobi who underwent rigorous combat training. The base of the sword resembles a nunchuck, and this connectivity makes it one of the most difficult and complex weapons in the series. Tengen's shinobi skills and path are both on display in his choice of sword, while also reflecting his showmanship and desire to leave a flashy mark with every move.

Inosuke Hashibira's jagged katanas serve a similar purpose. Although his swords are mainly aligned with the traditional Demon Slayer katana design, they are known for their jagged edges, which can help him cut and saw. On the one hand, Inosuke's jagged edges provide an additional function to his weapons, as seen in his decapitation of Upper Moon Daki. However, they also reflect his own savage and brutal nature, born of his solitary upbringing in the mountains. Inosuke's swords almost resemble the teeth of a boar, demonstrating that no matter how much stronger he gets or how high he rises in the ranks of Demon Slayer, he will always retain his wild, untamed side .
Genya and Lady Shinobu use alternative weapons to compensate for their weaknesses
While demon slayers like Tengen and Mitsuri use unique designs, their weapons still fit the general mold of being a sword. Genya Shinazugawa completely breaks this mold with his use of a firearm, which almost seems to come from an entirely different anime. Genya carries a traditional Nichirin katana, but the pistol seems to be his first choice in combat.
This reflects his explosive temperament, but unlike the aforementioned Demon Slayers , Genya's use of alternative weapons has more to do with pushing the limits. Genya has stated that he is unable to use breathing techniques - the main method for a Demon Slayer to improve his strength and speed. Genya's Nichirin bullets are intended to compensate for his inability to fight with a blade at its full potential.
Lady Shinobu Kocho, the insect-breathing Hashira, uses a katana. However, unlike any other katana in the series, she laces her weapon with a variety of poisons and venoms designed to immobilize or even kill demons. According to Shinobu, her lack of physical strength means that she is unable to cut off the heads of most demons.

To compensate for this weakness, Shinobu is a functional chemist who can concoct different concoctions on the fly to suit different combat situations. Her unique fighting style and choice of weapons make her one of the deadliest Hashira to face, depending on the match. Whether by choice, their background or even to compensate for their weaknesses, Demon Slayers who use weapons other than simple katanas see all their individual personalities and traits reflected in their choice of blade, enhancing the public's view of their character.
