Bartholomew Kuma was one of the 7 Grand Corsairs until the group was disbanded. He was originally a revolutionary whose former bounty was Berry Symbol296,000,000. He was once king of the Kingdom of Solbay, before becoming a vicious pirate feared by all, earning the nickname "The Tyrant". He was a human who agreed to be transformed into a Cyborg by Dr. Vegapunk for reasons as yet unknown. As soon as Vegapunk had completed Kuma's transformation into a Pacifista, Captain Corsair became the first in the series, bearing the serial number PX-0. He has eaten Nikyu Nikyu no Mi, which enables him to repel everything with his palms.

Hinata

He is the second antagonist of the Thriller Bark Arc (Gecko Moria is the first). He can also be considered one of the major antagonists of the Sabaody Arc (although he was secretly acting in the interests of the Straw Hats). He is one of the main antagonists of the Marineford Arc.

After his transformation into a cyborg, he became a slave of the Celestial Dragons, known as Invincible Slave.

He is also the father of Jewelry Bonney, and part of a "special race".

Appearance

Kuma is very tall (he measures almost 7 meters, making him the second (at the time) tallest member of the 7 Corsair Captains after Moria). He is frequently seen with a Bible in his hand. His general appearance is that of a bear, although there are obviously some notable differences. His face has a neutral expression. His chin is very pronounced and his eyes are white. In the anime, Kuma's hair and jacket are black and his hat is gray, whereas Oda originally intended his color scheme to be quite different (he was to be brown with an orange jacket and a yellowish hat covered with green spots). Later in Chapter 532, his color scheme is changed to match that of the anime (although it still remains quite different). When he was a member of the revolutionary army, he wore a brown hood that hid his body and showed only his face. After the ellipse, much of his clothing is ripped off, revealing his cyborg body, and he now has pincushion patterns on the bottom of his jacket.

Personality

Although he obeys the World Government, he seems to have his own conception of justice and despises the Navy, with which he collaborates only when ordered to do so. We learn from Emporio Ivankov during Marineford that he was once part of the revolutionary army.

Despite his imposing size and past reputation, Kuma has a very calm and quiet temperament. In addition to his demeanor, he can also be seen as a person of benevolent character, especially when compared to other privateer captains. This assumption can be underlined by some of his actions, particularly when he spares the lives of the Straw Hats on two occasions. He seems difficult to impress.

When he speaks, Kuma often uses the word target in his sentences. He also tends to ask a person where they'd like to go on a trip before sending them away with the power of his Demon Fruit, often honoring the recipient's request, but occasionally sending them to a location of his choosing, depending on whether he's received a response or not. Kuma delivers his message to Rayleigh. There are still many mysteries surrounding Kuma. The details behind his transformation into a "Pacifista" and what it entails are still unknown. He also whispered a message to Silvers Rayleigh during the Battle of the Sabaody Archipelago. It was later revealed:

" I work for the Revolutionary Army. Since we have a bond, I want to help this group (the Straw Hat Pirates) escape, as I have little time left before I become a full Pacifista. "
- Message from Kuma to Rayleigh.

Kuma has been shown to be a brilliant agent of deception as he successfully manipulated the World Government and hid his membership of the Revolutionary Army for several years, managing to be appointed to the position of Corsair Captain (although it seems they eventually discovered Kuma's role and forced him to accept a permanent lobotomy). Despite being perceived as the most dedicated of the Corsair Captains, Kuma still believes in his convictions enough to categorically refuse to approach high-ranking Marines like Admiral Kizaru directly. He has been generally calm and collected in any situation, and is subtle in achieving his goals (such as: not revealing the Straw Hat Pirates of the exact reasons for testing their power twice, then separating them across the world for future preparation). He has also shown great loyalty and honor to his cause in defending the "Thousand Sunny" from a steady stream of assaults over the course of two years, not even moving to recover from his injuries.

At present, however, the changes have been made. In the finalization of the Pacifista project, Kuma (as the original model and the only one with self-awareness) finally lost his will, personality and memory for the modifications, in order to guarantee his reliability and continued services towards the World Government. At this stage, Kuma shares the same blind intelligence of a "living weapon" with his other Pacifista models, recognizing only individuals as enemies or allies to the World Government. Don Quixote Doflamingo refers to the original personality as "dead", but it was later revealed that Kuma and Dr. Vegapunk (the man responsible for his cybernetic implants) entered into a secret agreement to allow Kuma to have a temporary relapse by rendering his last "will", as the defense of "Thousand Sunny".

After the ellipsis, Sentomaru declared that Kuma has been acting strangely ever since he lost his will. It turns out that before the modifications on him, transforming him completely, he and Doctor Vegapunk made an agreement that his last mission would be to protect the Thousand Sunny until one of the Straw Hat pirates arrived.

Relations

Jewelry Bonney

In her opinion, Kuma was a loving father whom she appreciated enormously, to the point of seeking revenge with Vegapunk when she discovered the cybernetic modifications he had made to her.

World Government

Kuma is currently completely modified into a Pacifista. He therefore follows government orders without question. It should be noted, however, that the reason for his claim to be a loyal tool of the World Government has not yet been revealed, nor the reason why he agreed to have his personality and memories removed, nor even why he had agreed to become a principal participant in the Pacifista project.

Marine

Since Bartholomew Kuma is now devoid of all humanity, he works alongside the Navy. But it's also thanks to them that he's been able to increase his fighting strength, notably through Dr. Vegapunk's modifications to his body, turning him into a cyborg.

The Pacifistas

He demonstrated his ability to command Pacifista units during his visit to the Sabaody Archipelago. He is responsible for eliminating the enemies of the World Government and the Navy as its replicas.

Corsairs

He's the only privateer willing to bend to the orders of the World Government, unlike his counterparts when he was alive, and even more so when his personality was extinguished.

Gecko Moria

Moria declared that Kuma's allegiance worried him more than any other Shichibukai (7 Great Corsairs). Only one relationship with fellow Corsairs has been shown, the Corsair in question being Gecko Moria. Moria feels that, because of his loyalty to the World Government, he cannot trust him. Kuma has shown great patience around Moria and offers assistance to help him against the Straw Hats, despite his lack of respect for him. Moria was severely insulted by his offer and showed no qualms about attacking him, despite the fact that Kuma seemed unaffected by his bullying tactics. Moria is knowledgeable about Kuma's Demon Fruit, as Moria said he knows about its powers and its tendency to ask people where they want to go on a trip before sending them to wherever the person has told him they want to go.

One Piece: 4 characters Bartholomew Kuma can defeat (and 4 he never could)

Doflamingo

No direct interaction is observed between Doflamingo and Kuma. Nevertheless, Doflamingo seems to be aware of the changes he has undergone, as he explains to Ivankov the reasons for his radical personality change. However, he seems unaware of Kuma's affiliation with the revolutionaries.

Marshall D. Teach

Kuma seemed to know Teach before his appointment as Corsair. He knew of Teach's past as a member of Whitebeard's crew and opposed his appointment. He had doubts about his appointment.

Revolutionaries

Kuma is originally a revolutionary who hates the government. Kuma has also told Silvers Rayleigh that he was still a revolutionary before his latest Pacifista modifications. At the Straw Hat Crew reunion, two years after the Battle of Marineford, Rayleigh reveals to Franky that Batholomew Kuma was a member of the revolutionaries who had infiltrated the Navy.

The Straw Hat Crew

Kuma had been ordered to eliminate the Straw Hat Crew following their defeat of Gecko Moria. However, he spared their lives in Thriller Bark and again in Sabaody, when he helped them escape from Kizaru and Sentomaru, marking his last act of free will.

Kuma also knows a lot about Luffy, as he at least knew that Ace and Dragon are his adoptive brother and biological father, respectively. These relationships are not public knowledge, and as such, very few people knew about them until Sengoku made them public during the war. He gave Luffy one last farewell before sending him to Amazon Lily and losing his free will when the Pacifista project was finalized.

Kuma's intentions during the incident with the world nobles on the Sabaody Archipelago were to save the Straw Hat Pirates. He also made a deal with Dr. Vegapunk to program him to protect the Thousand Sunny until a crew member returned. Franky has told the other Straw Hats that they owe Kuma a debt of gratitude, although the next time they meet, Kuma will be heartless, a mere human weapon of the government.

Rayleigh also points out that Kuma later made a deal with Dr. Vegapunk, before the latter turned him entirely into a cyborg. At Kuma's request, Dr. Vegapunk programmed his circuits with a single mission: to protect the Straw Hat crew's ship until he returned.

Rayleigh

He didn't attack Rayleigh, even though he was an enemy of the world government in the Sabaody Archipelago. He even confided in him that he considered him a friend.

Vegapunk

Kuma seems to have a pretty good relationship with Vegapunk. The scientist has granted him his final human wish, to protect the Straw Hats' ship until they return. It's very likely that Vegapunk greatly respects Kuma. After modifying his body and becoming the first pacifista prototype, he granted him this favor, further demonstrating his respect for the former revolutionary. These modifications earned him the wrath of Jewelry Bonney, his daughter.

Revolutionaries

Being under the total control of the World Government, he is officially against them, despite his former membership of the Revolutionaries.

Pirates including L'Équipage du Chapeau de Paille

He no longer has a personality, so he no longer recognizes them. He now sees them as enemies to be liquidated.

Skills and competencies

Kuma is one of the few people to have defeated the entire Straw Hat Crew, and is also the only character introduced so far to have defeated the crew single-handedly, twice. However, the crew was extremely weak each time and they were in no condition to fight again, let alone a Corsair Captain (in their first encounter, the crew had just finished a fight against a Corsair Captain, Gecko Moria, as well as an island full of zombies and Odz, in the second encounter, they had just fought off a Pacifista while fending off a second attack, Kizaru and Sentomaru). He doesn't want the crew dead, however, as he enabled them to escape.

Bartholomew Kuma was one of the Corsair Captains, a group that is one of the three great powers. Kuma is easily one of the most powerful characters to have appeared in history. Among other things, he was able to beat the Straw Hat Crew twice. Kuma also had very quick reflexes, as he managed to deflect one of Luffy's Gear Second attacks with ease.

He has such a ferocious reputation that even other powerful and famous pirates are baffled by him, as seen with the Supernova Eustass Kid, who seemed greatly disturbed when he saw the arrival of a cyborg Pacifista (mistaking him for the real Kuma) on the Sabaody Archipelago, close to where his crew was, despite the fact that his bounty was higher than Kuma's former bounty, showing how his strength is even greater than that implied by his former bounty in the eyes of others.

Prior to his latest Pacifista modifications, Kuma was a commander in the Revolutionary Army; consequently, he exercised control over the lower-ranking members of the group. However, he lost this power when he became a complete slave to the World Government.

Fruit of the Demon

Bartholomew Kuma ate Nikyu Nikyu no Mi, or Fruit des Coussinets in French, which is a Paramecia-type Demon Fruit that gives its user the power to repel anything its pads touch. It can also push things away at the speed of light. The user's ability to push things is physically represented by pads on the user's palms.

Kuma has made many people "disappear" by touching them with one of his hands. It is later revealed that he pushes them away, sending them flying to another destination he can choose, even if the destination requires several days' travel.

Kuma has also shown the ability to "push" or deflect things that are not palpable, such as people's pain or exhaustion. It manifests itself when Kuma took all the pain Luffy had suffered on Thriller Bark and left him feeling completely healthy, meaning his abilities can be used to heal people. However, in this case, Kuma took away Luffy's pain because Zoro had agreed to take it instead. It's unclear what would happen if the pain, which took the form of a giant bubble, hadn't been transferred to Zoro. It seems that Kuma's ability doesn't give him the power to heal damage, but that he can simply extract it and let it go elsewhere.

Kuma fights in a style reminiscent of sumo wrestling. He crouches low in a wide stance, and attacks using his special legs to launch air bubbles with powerful explosions. Many of his attacks are sumo-inspired, with Kuma spending almost all his time with his feet planted in the ground. He has also demonstrated the ability to block all physical attacks, including sword attacks, by repelling them with his hands.

Kuma's abilities can also be used to create attacks of mass destruction. This is demonstrated by his attack, "Ursus Shock", which consists of a "bomb" inside which is highly compressed air created by repelling the air between his hands. This destructive power is enough to demolish an entire island or injure a massive giant like Odz Jr.

Modifications Pacifista

Kuma is now a cyborg modified by Vegapunk. He is, however, very different from the other cyborgs, displaying far greater intensity and agility. He's extremely fast, fast enough to disappear in the eyes of the Straw Hats, like everyone else on Thriller Bark. Whether this has something to do with Dr. Vegapunk's modifications, or whether it's part of his Demon Fruit powers, or simply his raw speed, is hard to say.

His body is able to resist most attacks, including Sanji's and Zoro's kicks, even "Shishi Sonson", a technique that managed to cut through steel. this attack only makes a scratch on Kuma. Even after two years of accumulated damage, lack of maintenance and lack of food, Kuma was still operational. Although the modifications gave Kuma great strength, their complete completion over a long period of time apparently robbed Kuma of his free will. In Pacifista, Kuma has the ability to fire laser beams, which not only cause massive explosions when detonated, but can also melt steel. This laser is apparently a replica of Kizaru's powers, installed only in his mouth. In the other Pacifistas, the laser is installed on their palms too.

Geographical knowledge

Through his actions, he seems to have a great knowledge of geography, as he shows with his powers, he knows exactly where he's seemingly sending someone, no matter where they are in the world. His degree of knowledge is broad enough to perfectly locate even an island in the sky that is mobile, although his cyborg modifications may have enhanced this ability. This has also been shown when he asks people where they'd like to go before he sends them there.

History

Past

As a child, he became a slave to the Celestial Dragons. One day, he decided to run away, and after he left, he began to cry and tremble. However, his fellow inmates found him and started beating him as he asked them to stop. The latter told him that if he didn't come back, they'd all be killed, but he replied that he didn't want to go back to that place and that he'd rather be killed there because if he came back, he'd have lost his life. anyway. The other slaves continued to beat him even though he asked for forgiveness and help.

Somehow, he managed to escape captivity and later became king of the Kingdom of Sorbet. He was, however, deposed in some unknown way and given the reputation of being a tyrannical king, so much so that he was nicknamed "the tyrant" and received a bounty.

According to many people, such as Perona, Charlotte Laura, the Risky Brothers and Jinbe, Kuma was once a violent, tyrannical ruler, rumored to have pushed the limits of human atrocity, being said to be "brutal beyond measure". For this reason, he was known as "Kuma the Tyrant". This reputation, however, was falsified by the World Government, according to Jewelry Bonney, his daughter, because Kuma had spoken out against the World Government.

22 years before the present, he teamed up with Monkey D. Dragon and Emporio Ivankov to create the Revolutionary Army. Twelve years before the present, he witnessed the immolation of Grey Terminal, and helped the survivors board revolutionary ships. Although this team was a precursor to the revolutionaries, it's not known whether Kuma stayed with Dragon after he began his campaign against the World Government. He had long known about the relationship between Monkey D. Luffy and Dragon, and considering that even Emporio Ivankov didn't know about it, this means that Kuma was either incredibly close to Dragon, or had been informed of their relationship by Sengoku, Garp or Akainu after he became a Privateer Captain, as they were the only ones in the Marines to know that Dragon was Luffy's father.

Arc Jaya

Kuma first appears at a meeting of the Corsair Captains in the Arc of Jaya, whose purpose is to appoint a successor to Crocodile. In the middle of the meeting, they are interrupted by another person, a silhouette of a man indicating that he wishes to take part in the meeting. He is identified by one of the Marines as Laffitte, a policeman who was known for his violent ways and exiled from the West Blue Navy. He declares that he wishes to put his captain's name forward for appointment as Captain Corsair. The name "Teach" is put forward by Laffitte. It is said that because he is an unknown pirate, he has little value to them, but Laffitte asks them to work on this and remember the name of Blackbeard's Pirates.

Bow Thriller Bark

I'll make you a proposition. I'll let you live if, in exchange, you hand over the head of the famous Straw Hat captain, Monkey D. Luffy.

— Kuma to the Straw Hat Pirates.

With orders from the World Government to teach Gecko Moria to replace Crocodile, Kuma came to Thriller Bark. Arriving there, he asked some of Perona's zombie servants, who were loading the treasures onto the Thousand Sunny, where their master was. However, he met with some resistance. The zombies reported his actions to the person they served, Perona. The latter recognized Kuma and trembled with fear at the sight of him. Despite Kuma's reputation, however, Perona became angry with him and tried to send ghosts after him. However, asking her where she'd like to go before removing a glove, he made her disappear by sending her flying to Kuraigana Island. Zombies seeing this strength tried to attack her, but were frightened by her mere presence. Kuma then spotted Nami, recognized her and asked her if Luffy had an older brother. After receiving her answer, he then somehow teleported away and continued his search for Moria. Kuma then found Moria in the dance hall in Thriller Bark's mansion. After a few formalities, he informed Moria that Crocodile had been replaced by the pirate Blackbeard. Although the void in the Corsairs' ranks had been filled, he said he felt Moria a little uneasy about the situation.

The World Government has been preoccupied with one subject since the events at Enies Lobby. It's been keeping a close eye on the actions of the Straw Hat Crew, and if their ship follows the Water Seven log to Fishman Island, there's a good chance it'll run aground. Now you can see what the government's worried about, can't you? They fear at any moment that the Straw Hat Crew will bring down another of the great privateers. Am I making myself clear? If you're not sure you can do it alone, I can lend a hand. In a fight, nothing is ever 100% certain.

— Kuma at Gecko Moria

Kuma then said that The Crew of the Straw Hat was likely to be heading for the vicinity of Moria Island, so something had to be done about them. He explained to Moria, that the World Government had raised the alert level for these pirates considerably since the assault on Enies Lobby. Although he had no specific orders, he offered to help Moria in the fight against the Straw Hats. Moria got angry and told Kuma to sit back and watch how he would beat them. However, despite Moria's predictions, he was one of the witnesses to Moria's defeat by Luffy. After the battle, Kuma then reported this to the World Government.

Fearing that rumors of Moria's defeat would cause another global scandal as with Crocodile, the World Government ordered him to kill all witnesses in Thriller Bark, including the Straw Hat Pirates. Accepting the order, he launched an attack on some of the members of the Thriller Bark Victims Association before focusing his attention on Zoro. Kuma gradually weakened Zoro and used his Demon Fruit ability to neutralize Franky and Sanji. He then gives the Crew and witnesses to the scene an ultimatum: either give him Luffy, and he'll let them live, or refuse and he kills everyone present with an air bomb. When they refuse his offer, Kuma quietly uses his powers to throw the bomb, engulfing part of the island (in the anime, the whole island was affected). Although this fails to kill the Straw Hats, the attack does affect them all. Just as he's about to catch Luffy unconscious, Zoro, in a desperate move, hits him with a "Shishi Sonson" in a bid to kill him by cutting him in half. However, he's too exhausted from fighting Ryuma and the zombies to do him any harm.

Kuma's shoulder wound reveals him to be a cyborg like Franky, but different. Kuma is an incomplete human weapon created by Dr. Vegapunk, known as "Pacifista". Zoro offers to trade his life for Luffy's. At this point, Sanji intervenes and decides to give his life rather than Zoro's. Zoro then hits him, sensing that he is in danger. The latter then hits him, feeling it necessary to sacrifice his own life rather than Sanji's. Kuma declares that if he went after Luffy rather than Zoro, his honor would be "at stake", but that he will instead show Zoro what hell is like. Using the power of Nikyu Nikyu no Mi, Kuma pushes the pain and fatigue he endured throughout his fight with Moria out of Luffy's body, and directs it at Zoro, demanding in exchange for Luffy's life that he endure all the pain and fatigue his captain has accumulated. At Zoro's request, Kuma moves the pain bubble aside, and walks away as Zoro enters the bubble. Kuma then teleports to the entrance of the ship. He is last seen on Thriller Bark meditating on Dragon having a good son with a loyal crew.

Later, he is seen in the company of Garp and Sengoku, being scolded by the latter for his inability to grasp the Straw Hats.

Sabaody Bow

After the Crew had defeated one Pacifista, Sentomaru appeared with another, at which point the real one interrupted the fight. He was surprised to see Zoro after his attack on him in Thriller Bark and made him disappear. He makes a Pacifista disappear, enraging Sentomaru. He will separate all the other members of the Straw Hat Crew to protect them from Kizaru, Sentomaru and the Pacifista. He will tell Silvers Rayleigh that he is part of the Revolutionary Army and wanted to help Luffy escape, as he had little time left before becoming a full Pacifista.

Arc Marineford

He takes part in the Battle of Marineford as a complete cyborg (after being modified by Vegapunk). He confronts Oz Jr. with Doflamingo and Gecko Moria, then Emporio Ivankov, who no longer recognizes him and tries to restore his mind, but to no avail... He retreats after the arrival of Shanks.

Post-War Arc

He will face the Exocet Riders at Sabaody.

Arc Return to Sabaody

Whatever the nature of his pact with the World Government, the Corsair must have made one, for he had also made an agreement with Vegapunk as part of his final transformation: a program that involved protecting the Straw Hat Crew's ship and not letting anyone near it until one of the crew returned! And so it was that Kuma, even transformed into a mere machine, protected the Thousand Sunny for two years, leaving his post only when Franky, the first to arrive, presented himself to him.

"Mission accomplished", Kuma simply pronounces, as he rises and heads off to who-knows-where, ready to carry out the orders of the World Government... And so our friends owe a debt of gratitude to Kuma, who has done everything in his power to help them and who will, unfortunately, be an enemy of the World Government the next time they meet.

Arc Rêverie

As punishment for helping the Straw Hat Crew, the Celestial Dragons have decided to humiliate him and use him as a slave.

A few months later, as the Reverie is about to begin and all the participating royalty have arrived, Saint Charlos attempts to capture Princess Shirahoshi but is violently struck by a club held by Mjosgard. The kings and queens then leave the social plaza to join the first Lev Ely meeting. Saint Rosward, who has caught wind of the incident, passes through the Celestial Dragons' portal to enter the grounds of Castle Pangea on the back of Bartholomew Kuma, who happens to be the former ruler of the Kingdom of Solbay. Charlos is delighted with this news and Rosward demonstrates by hitting Kuma with a sledgehammer and stabbing him, Kuma neither screams nor moans. He is, according to Rosward, an invincible slave. Bonney has taken advantage of the situation to infiltrate the Celestial Dragons' lands, and is greatly affected by Kuma's vision. She says she'll never forgive them, and weeps at the sight. The revolutionary infiltrators Sabo, Karasu, Lindbergh and Morley are also outraged by the situation. According to Lindbergh, the World Government is using Kuma as an example to show the world what happens to those who oppose the Celestial Dragons, no matter who they are or were. The Revolutionaries took the decision to rescue Kuma and get him out of this place.

Arc Wano Kuni

Blackbeard explains that he has read in the newspaper that the revolutionaries have stormed the Reverie in an attempt to free Kuma, and that they are confronting Admirals Fujitora and Ryokugyu at Mary Geoise. Indeed, on the fourth day of the Levely, Sabo and his group launched their operation, burning the Celestial Dragons' flag at Mary Geoise, and killing Nefertari Cobra. They then fought Fujitora and Ryokugyu to save Kuma. The mission was a success and he and his group escaped from Mary Geoise.

Egg Head Island Arch

After his release, he was taken to Momoiro Island, where Dragon tried to communicate with him but failed due to his zero cognitive capacity.

Later and without warning, Kuma began to run while the Revolutionary Army repaired him, later transporting him to Red Port. He then attempted to climb Red Line, but was shot down by marine squads and fell back onto Red Port, where he then began to defend himself against the marine squads and once again climbed Red Line after defeating the marines.
