Appearance

James has the appearance of a stunted, stocky child. He is bald and wears overalls over a white top. He also wears round glasses. Mask is the complete opposite of James. Tall and imposing, he's easily identifiable by his luchador mask, which covers the upper half of his face except for his nose. His mask has a star pattern on the forehead and thick markings around his eyes, nose and cheeks. His boots and gloves are red. He has brown eyes and a blond moustache. In addition, he wears a champion's belt with a large round buckle rather than the standard buckle worn by other Stern Ritters.

Personality

James has the mentality of a young fan, unfailingly supporting his idol, Mask De Masculine. He motivates him to excel, and brings a bell to Mask's fights. When Mask is in trouble, he gives him moral support and is saddened by the thought of him losing, encouraging him to get back on his feet.

As for Mask, he's a man of little intelligence. He had no idea that a vice-captain could free the Bankai, believing that only a captain was capable of such a feat.

He acts like a luchador and has a comrade follow him around with a bell to declare when a match begins and ends. He also poses to proclaim his victory and prefers to have an audience witness his victory.

Mask, on the other hand, is very quick-witted and knows how to react without hesitation during a fight, piercing his own eardrums to counter Rose's Bankai ability as soon as he knows it's weak. He cares deeply for his friends and fans, and shows enormous rage when they are attacked for supporting him. However, this didn't stop him from ignoring the fact that James, his fan, was in the blast radius of his Star Flash - Supernova as he stood by him against Renji, arrogantly reminding him that as long as he breathes, James will continue to live again.

Mask considers himself a hero of justice while calling his enemies villains and cowards, and asserts that his goal is to eradicate evil and villains, boasting that anything used by them will never work against him. He becomes enraged and abandons the pretext of fighting for justice when he suffers a serious injury.

  • Immortality: James has the ability to be immortal as long as Mask is still alive, able to take any kind of damage and get back up without further delay, even if he's cut in half or practically maimed, despite this great ability only This helps him stay alive to continue cheering Mask on until he can finish off his opponents.
    • James' small division: if the original body is unable to fight, Superstar will allow James to divide into smaller bodies.

Skills and competencies (Mask)

Mask is a very powerful character among the Stern Ritters, able to defeat Renji Abarai in their first encounter with disconcerting ease. In the second battle, he defeated a coalition of Ikkaku, Hisagi and Yumichika without difficulty. He was also able to defeat Kensei and then Rōjūrō, both using their Bankai. In his second clash with Renji, Renji had to use his real Bankai in order to surpass Quincy's strength. James' real strength lies in his ability, The Superstar, which enables him to create an alter-ego, "Mask De Masculine", and drastically increase its strength through his cheering. What's more, both James and "Mask" can regenerate indefinitely as long as the other is alive.

Reiatsu and physical prowess: Mask is a fighter of a level equivalent, if not superior, to that of a Captain of the 13 Divisions. He had no trouble beating Renji before his training and two Captains using their Bankai. His physical strength is exceptional and his fighting techniques impressive. A master of hand-to-hand combat, he has developed his art like no other, using wrestling techniques to fight.

Quincy capabilities

By virtue of his position, Mask naturally masters the basic techniques of the Quincys. By absorbing spiritual particles, he becomes able to move through the air or levitate, among other things.

Hirenkyaku The Quincys' fast-moving technique that rivals the Shinigamis' Shunpo. He was able to dodge Kensei's Bankai punch and retaliate with a knee strike in an instant.

Shadows Like all Vandenreich soldiers, Mask can use shadows to create interdimensional portals to travel between the Schatten Bereich and the Seireitei, or allow soldiers to pass through the portal to assist him.

Wrestling techniques

As previously mentioned, Mask is a master of bare-knuckle fighting, using his body as a weapon. He has developed several kinds of wrestling-based techniques, such as dropkicks, tackles and direct hits.

  • Star Eagle Kick (スター・イーグルキック, Sutā Īgurukikku): Mask delivers a powerful knee strike to his opponent.
  • Star Headbutt (スター・ヘッドバット, Sutā Heddobatto): Grabbing his enemy's head, he delivers a powerful headbutt.
  • Star Rocket Headbutt (スター・ロケット・ヘッドバット, Sutā Roketto Heddobatto): Mask throws himself with his whole body and head forward at his opponent, like a rocket.
  • Star Dropkick (スター・ドロップキック, Sutā Doroppukikku): Mask delivers a powerful kick to his foe that hurls him away.
Schrift

James inherited the Schrift "S", for "The Superstar".

The Superstar (英雄 (ザ・スーパースター), Za Sūpāsutā; English for "The Superstar", Japanese for "The Hero") : Mask is capable of the ability to enhance his physical abilities and regenerate when he cheers for him. While under his ordinary power, Mask is humiliated by Kensei in Bankai; after a single cheer from James, he is able to defeat Kensei, now unable to inflict the slightest damage, followed by Rōjūrō without the slightest difficulty. When James gives him enough encouragement, Mask obtains a new form he calls the Star Power Up (スター・パワーアップ, Sutā Pawā Appu). His mask changes patterns, he loses his Quincy clothes, leaving only wrestling clothes. Conversely, Mask is also able to regenerate James when he calls for him, allowing them to replenish each other without limit as long as one of them is alive.

  • Star Flash (スター・フラッシュ, Sutā Furasshu): Placing his index and middle fingers on the star of his mask, Mask launches a star-shaped laser beam of fearsome effectiveness. Just one of these beams mortally wounded Rōjurō Ōtoribashi.
  • Deadly Star Punch (スター殺人パンチ, Sutā Satsujin Panchi): When Mask gets angry, a star-shaped mark appears on his fist before hitting the opponent with a terrible shockwave. Mask also calls this technique the hammer of justice.
  • Star Lariat (スター・ラリアット, Sutā Rariatto): He concentrates energy in his arm before throwing out a huge shockwave followed by multiple shockwaves caused by his punches. This technique is powerful enough to devastate an entire area. He also calls it the One Mile Art.

    Quincy: Complete

After receiving enough cheers from James, Mask can use the Quincy: Vollständig. His belt buckle glows, enveloping his mask in light. After activating the technique, Mask gains a star-shaped Heiligenschein above his head, small wings on his chest and a cape that doubles as wings. His Reiatsu then turns galaxy-red.

Vollständig's special ability: James's Schrift, The Superstar, is amplified to its maximum. Mask then obtains his maximum power.

    • Star Flash: Super Nova (Sutā Furasshu: Sūpā Nova): Mask flies high into the sky, tracing a Reishi pentagram with his wings. As he launches the attack, a gigantic destructive ray hits the ground, creating a huge explosion.

    History

Bleach : Thousand Year Blood War

As soon as he learns that Quilge is facing Ichigo at Hueco Mundo, Yhwach summons the Stern Ritters to gather at the Sun Gate and prepare to invade the Soul Society. During the Seireitei invasion, Mask attacks Renji from behind, while the latter is in the midst of fighting Äs Nödt. But his attack is stopped by Byakuya, who uses Senbonzakura. When Äs Nödt's arm is lacerated by the Captain's Shikai, Mask is particularly surprised and comes to assist his colleague. However, Byakuya has trapped the ground, which collapses under Mask's weight, causing him to fall into a deep hole.

Later, when Byakuya is relentlessly attacked by Äs Nödt with Senbonzakura Kageyoshi, Renji freaks out at the scene and decides to free his Bankai. But before he can do so, Mask attacks the Vice-Captain with a drop kick that sends him flying several dozen meters. Although the Stern Ritter has just defeated his opponent, Äs Nödt reprimands him because they could have stolen one more Bankai if he hadn't attacked in such a hurry. Surprised, Mask thought that only Captains had Bankai. Äs Nödt told him to read the Daten that Yhwach had given them. Later, when Yhwach retires to the Schatten Bereich, Mask returns with a smile on his face.

After the events of the invasion, Mask and the other Stern Ritters are summoned to Silbern Cathedral. They all witness Yhwach's speech naming Uryū Ishida as his successor. In the Stern Ritters' common quarters, Mask is the first to respond to Bazz-B, quite upset by the news, telling him that he doesn't know why the King has made this decision. Later, Mask attends a meeting of the Stern Ritters led by Haschwalth. Haschwalth tells them of his intention to steal the hopes of the Shinigami, particularly the Captains whose Bankai has been stolen.

During the second invasion of the Vandenreich, which feeds the Seireitei through the Schatten Bereich, Mask attacks Hisagi, Ikkaku and Yumichika. Accompanied by a companion, James, Mask easily stops Ikkaku and Yumichika's first attack, before being stopped in turn by Hisagi. Moments later, Hisagi and Madarame gain the upper hand against Masculine Mask, mortally wounding him. Moments later, after Bambietta's defeat, James encourages Mask to start round 2. The 3 Shinigamis are then surprised when the opponent they thought they'd defeated rises to his feet with more spirit than before.

Mask then pounces on them and has no difficulty in defeating them with just a few blows. Happy to have defeated all the officers he'd found, he then spots two rays of light entering the Seireitei and sets off to see what it is. But Hisagi ties his foot with Kazeshini, declaring that this isn't over. Mask then pulls Shūhei towards him before knocking him out with a lariat. He is then about to stomp on him when Kensei appears, berating his vice-captain for failing to deploy the fruits of his training. Mask tries to put their confrontation on hold as he has to go and investigate the two lights, but is interrupted by Rose, who asks him not to back down. The Stern Ritter then accepts their challenge without batting an eyelid.

Kensei unleashes his Bankai, Tekken Tachikaze. Mask then lunges at him with a double kick, easily countered by the captain of the 9th Division. Frustrated that his subordinate had lost by such a weak attack, he lashes out at Quincy with a powerful blow to the abdomen that brings him to his knees, as a stunned James looks on. Kensei then explains the ability of his Bankai, which infuses his fists with explosive energy, causing a violent explosion on each impact. He then sends him flying into a building.

Seeing his idol on the ground, James starts crying and calls to him to get up. Kensei is then challenged by Hisagi, who has regained consciousness, telling him to get rid of the kid first. Mask gets up quickly and promptly sends the two captains flying into the background, revealing his power to build up strength thanks to his fan's cheers: "The Superstar". Kensei soon gets up again, but is caught off guard by the Stern Ritter, who deals him a multitude of violent blows while being protected by Tekken Tachikaze thanks to James's cheers. The captain of the 9th Division is soon defeated by Mask, who breaks his arm before sending him to the ground and kneeing him in the head.

But the Stern Ritter hardly has time to savor his victory, as James is violently sliced by Rose, who in turn unleashes his Bankai, Kinshara Butôdan. Sending her dancers to surround Mask, Rose then uses Sea Drift, which drowns Stern Ritter under a whirlpool of water, before burning him with Prometheus. The stunned Quincy asserts that no Zanpakutō masters water and fire, and muses that there is an illusion. Rose confirms that his ability plays with his heart through music and that he will die as a result. He then uses his third technique, Ein Heldenleben, but finds that Mask has pierced his eardrums to escape his technique. The latter projects a beam of energy, Star Flash, at Rose, who is pierced by the technique and falls to the ground.

Seeing that he's still alive, Mask prepares to finish him off, but his second Star Flash is countered by Renji, back at the Seireitei with Rukia. Asking her to take the captains with her, he prepares to face the Stern Ritter alone. The latter asks James, still alive, to help him regenerate his eardrums, but as soon as he does so, Renji decapitates the young fan, understanding that his opponent's ability works thanks to the latter's acclamations. Mask, violently sliced in the abdomen by Renji, is cheered on again by James (still alive despite his injuries), which gives him a power-up that tears his clothes and transforms his mask. Rushing at Renji with all his techniques, which corner the vice-captain, unable to hold on or gain support, Mask then releases his Vollständig and, encouraged again by James, unleashes his most powerful technique, Star Flash - Supernova, which burns to the ground the district in which they were fighting and completely annihilates James. Mask proclaims that James is not dead, as they are one and the same, and will regenerate him later.

However, Renji is not defeated and releases his Bankai, which seems to change form, surprising Mask. Renji releases his true Bankai: Sōō Zabimaru. Mask, surprised to see that Renji has survived his most powerful attack, lunges at him, but the vice-captain then uses Hihiô to break Mask's arm before sending him flying. The latter instantly gets up, but this time is pierced by Renji, who uses Orochiô. Continuing with another technique, Sōō Zabimaru - Zaga Teppō, Renji finally reduces the Stern Ritter to ashes. Seconds later, James' soul is absorbed by Yhwach, who congratulates him on having fought well.
