Colonel Roy Mustang or the Flame Alchemist is a state alchemist in the Amestris army. One of the heroes of the Ishbal Civil War, he dreams of becoming Führer to improve the political and military situation in Amestris.

Appearance
Like all members of the Amestris army, he wears a blue uniform, his Flame Alchemist gloves and black shoes. The only time we see him without his uniform, he wears a white shirt.
Personality
This character is wracked with guilt, not least for his part in the Ishbal war, in which he took many lives. He also harbors a terrible desire for revenge since the death of his best friend Hugues, and will do anything to avenge him.
He's also very ambitious, as evidenced by his deep-seated desire to rise to the head of power.
History
He is a state alchemist, codenamed Flame Alchemist. Thanks to his glove, engraved with a special transmutation circle, he can create fire with a snap of his fingers. This flame is generated by the spark formed by the glove material rubbing against itself. Once done, Mustang creates oxygen with the dioxygen present in the air to have a fuel (oxygen), an oxidizer (dioxygen) and induces an explosion with the spark. We've also learned that it's capable of producing phenomenal explosions using water. In fact, water is mainly composed of Dihydrogen, a flammable and explosive gas. All he has to do is place his hand (either wearing a circle, or wearing his glove with the circle) and produce the explosion with a spark (or sufficiently hot source).
He's a character consumed by his past, and in particular by his participation in the Ishbal war waged by the army. He took part in the massacre and, in the 2003 anime, had to execute Winry Rockbell's parents. For these reasons, he will cover for the Elric brothers during their interventions against the Army.
Although he appears to be nothing more than an "Army dog", his goal is to rise to the highest rank so that he can stop massacres like the Ishbal massacre and radically change the Amestris regime (and, incidentally, make mini-skirts part of army uniforms and have only female soldiers). He has a great affection for his subordinates, even if he seems to do everything to hide it, and this affection is also at the heart of his vision, a little too ideal, of the army where superiors must protect the weak in exchange for the trust and obedience of subordinates, the aim being to create a kind of pyramid where the head, the President, protects everyone.
He was best friends with Maes Hughes and was deeply affected by his murder. At the latter's funeral, he even confessed that he understood why the Elric brothers had transgressed the rules by wanting to revive their mother, and even envisaged a human transmutation. His relationship with Lieutenant Hawkeye is somewhere between friendship and love, not only because she is his master's daughter, but also because they were both affected by the Ishbal war.
Skills
Roy Mustang is a true fire monster, and his alchemy is considered one of the most destructive possible, capable of taking down any enemy with the snap of a finger, but his weak point is rain, or even any source of water preventing him from using his skills, rendering him powerless.
