Shinji Hirako

Shinji Hirako - Manga Imperial

Shinji Hirako (Hirako Shinji) is Captain of the 5th Division of Gotei 13. Momo Hinamori is his Vice-Captain. When he first appeared, he was the unofficial recruiter and leader of the Vizards. He was also the Captain of the 5th Division 100 years before the story begins, with Sōsuke Aizen as Vice-Captain, resuming his position some time after the traitor's conviction.

Appearance

Shinji has brown eyes and blond hair with a bobbed bob. Many of his facial expressions reveal his upper teeth. When he was trying to recruit Ichigo, he wore the school uniform of Karakura High School, although he usually wears pants, shirt and tie, often complemented by a journalist's cap and a long coat. Shinji seems to have a round ring pierced in the middle of his tongue.

During his first term as Captain, before leaving Soul Society, his hair was very long, down to the small of his back. He wore the traditional shihakushō with a long-sleeved haori over it, a symbol of his status. Seventeen months after the defeat of Aizen, Shinji wore this outfit again but made the choice to add a tie under his uniform. His hair has kept the same length as when he was a Vizard, but his bangs are now asymmetrical, the left side being longer than the right.

Personality

Shinji is a bit of a comic, adding a touch of levity to situations that are normally serious. He constantly speaks in a dialect called Kansai-ben, has a casual attitude under ordinary circumstances and seems to enjoy annoying his associate, Hiyori Sarugaki, which usually results in him being slapped in the face by one of her sandals. She, in turn, shows him absolutely no respect, regularly insulting and attacking him; his behavior towards her is no better, often making faces or provoking to piss her off. He also has a habit of telling pretty girls he meets that they're his "first love", despite the obvious lie (although he never did this with Hiyori, which pissed him off even more). He also loves listening to jazz, as he had a phonograph that played his vinyl records when he was a Captain.

Despite his temperament, however, he is very perceptive and observant, being one of the few people 100 years ago who suspected Sōsuke Aizen of shady activities, and who could see through some of his illusions. He also notes that Urahara reminds him of himself when he first started out. Aizen even admits to being somewhat intimidated by him. Whenever he's angry or in battle, Shinji is quite calm, serious and cool-headed.

Skills and competencies

Being a Captain and formerly a Vizard, Shinji is a powerful individual, well above the level of a Vice-Captain. Even by a Captain's standards, he possesses balanced skills and has proven to be above average, being able to individually dominate Grimmjow and Tōsen or even challenge Aizen to a duel. Even when the latter gets down to business, Shinji is one of the last Captains to be defeated, proof of his fighting skills. During the Millennium Bloody War, he will once again prove his abilities and stamina, being one of the few Captains to fight throughout the war.

Reiatsu and physical prowess

As Captain, Shinji possesses great spiritual power. Also a Vizard, he possesses the essence of both a Shinigami and a Hollow. His Reiatsu has been described as monstrous. He also possesses impressive strength, able to block Mashiro's Hollowmorphosis attack with one hand, while holding someone with the other. And Shinji's stamina is well above average. He was able to slow down his own Hollowfication while fighting Tōsen, and in the battle against Aizen, he suffered several injuries before being knocked out of the fight. During the Millennial Bloody War, he took an explosive Vollständig attack from Bambietta head-on and managed to get back on his feet (thanks to Hinamori's healing) shortly afterwards, assisting the other Captains in the fight against the Quincys.

Shinigami abilities

Zanjutsu

Shinji is a highly skilled swordsman, being a Captain and the leader of the Vizards. At one point, when Shinji fought Ichigo, the other Vizards mention that Ichigo is stupid to fight Shinji, which is proven by the fact that Shinji doesn't take the fight seriously (although Ichigo was also holding back, because he was trying to suppress his inner Hollow). Shinji faced Grimmjow, the 6th Espada, keeping his cool in the face of the destruction Grimmjow was bringing and fending off the Espada with little effort, using only his Hollow mask and Zanjutsu.

Hohō

Shinji excels in Shunpo, easily outclassing Grimmjow, the 6th Espada and a master of Sonído, during their duel. As a Captain, even before becoming a Vizard, he was the first to arrive to save Hiyori during the Hollowmorphose incident, when Lisa had a head start and all the other captains left later at the same time. Shinji is also extremely fast at short range: during his first attack on Aizen, he saw and dodged Tōsen's surprise attack while suffering only a small scratch above his left eye as that attack aimed to slice through his skull.

Kidō

Although he's never used a Kidō in combat, Shinji has enough skill to put Ichigo into a deep sleep instantly or dispel a concealment spell, Bakudō #26, cast by Aizen.

Zanpakutō

Sakanade (逆撫, Reversed Strike): In its sealed form, it looks like a normal katana. The hilt and scabbard are red and its guard is shaped like an hourglass.

Shikai

The release command is "Reverse" (倒れろ, taorero ). In its Shikai form, the pommel elongates and obtains a large ring that allows Sakanade to rotate around Shinji's hand without him actually holding his sword. This movement is linked to his sword's special ability. Sakanade gets five holes along the blade.

Special Shikai ability: Sakanade's ability is to create a Sakasama no Sekai (逆様の世界, Inverted World). When the Shikai is activated, the sword creates a pink mist with a pleasant fragrance. All those who smell its aroma are then subject to an optical illusion. From the point of view of those who fall victim to this technique, everything is reversed. Up and down, left and right, what's in front and what's behind. What's more, Sakanade also changes the direction of the gaze and the direction of the blows. Shinji asserts that it is not possible to counter Sakanade's effects by taking them all into account in his mind. No matter how powerful the opponent, especially if you're used to combat, your body won't be able to adapt, since it instinctively relies on what it sees. The inverted world effect can be used to target just one person, making it ideal for use in multi-person combat. It also severely affects the balance of those whose power is used, making them dizzy, confused, disoriented and/or nauseous. Shinji has also trained himself to use this technique to reverse the words he speaks.

Bankai

Sakashima Yokoshima Happōfusagari (逆様邪八宝塞, Eight Sealed Treasures of Inverted Evil): When activated, Shinji's Bankai transforms Sakanade into a staff with a large ring at the front, while Shinji himself stands inside a large golden flower construction. The flower petals close completely for the duration of the Bankai, protecting Shinji inside as a pink mist is generated from the top of the flower.

Bankai special ability: Sakashima Yokoshima Happōfusagari is a large-scale Bankai that targets opponents and allies without distinction or exception. The mist he generates reverses the perception of allies and enemies for anyone in the vicinity of his Bankai, Shinji himself being the only person not affected. As a result, all allies become enemies, while all enemies become allies for the duration of the technique. Bankai's effect is powerful enough to cause an entire squad of Quincy soldiers to slaughter each other in a matter of seconds without the slightest hesitation. According to Shinji himself, if Bankai was active for too long, the effects of the technique would spread throughout the Seireitei.

Hirako Shinji (Bleach)

Hollowmorphose

Shinji can don a Hollow mask that closely resembles a Pharaoh's mask, with a short floating hood that hangs from the back of his neck. When he dons his Hollow mask, Shinji's eyes turn completely black and his irises turn gray.

  • Power boost: While wearing the mask, Shinji's Hollow powers complement his Shinigami powers, giving him a considerable increase in strength and speed.
  • Cero: Shinji gathers the energy displayed in a horizontal line in his fist. He then unleashes a red Cero with devastating force. The Cero is powerful enough to severely wound Grimmjow, even though he has mitigated the damage.
  • Improved stamina: with his Hollow mask, Shinji becomes much more resistant to pain. He even declares that when he underwent Hollowmorphosis for the first time, "wearing the mask feels like controlling someone else's body".

Past

Turn Back The Pendulum

Some 110 years ago, Shinji, then captain of the Fifth Division at the time, prepared for a captain's promotion ceremony and greeted the arrival of his Vice-Captain, Sōsuke Aizen. He questions Aizen about his fashion sense since he wears only the usual clothes of a Shinigami, forcing the two to debate whether they should wear different clothes for the event. When Aizen comments on the music Shinji is listening to, Shinji explains that it's jazz and that's what's fashionable in the Real World at the moment. The two then head for the 1st Division's quarters to attend the ceremony. Arriving at the 1st Division gates, Shinji is attacked by Hiyori, Vice-Captain of the 12th Division. She is then reprimanded by Love, Captain of the 7th Division, who takes her by force to the ceremony. Shinji takes this opportunity to make a face at Hiyori, which irritates her.

As the group advanced inside, Shinji asked Love how many people there would be for the ceremony, to which Love replied that almost everyone was already there. Shinji said he had seen that no one from the 11th Division had shown up. The 10th Kenpachi wouldn't be making an appearance, being very lazy about such meetings. As for the 10th Division, their previous Captain had fallen in battle and the post had been vacant ever since. The two captains' conversation is then interrupted by the arrival of 8th Division Captain Shunsui Kyōraku, his Vice-Captain Lisa and 13th Division Captain Jūshirō Ukitake. Shunsui accused the two of gossiping behind other people's backs. Shinji then witnessed the conversation between Shunsui and Ukitake about who had been the captain the longest and what had happened to the previous captain of the 12th Division, Kirio Hikifune, who was promoted to the Royal Guard.

He is then present during the ceremony in which Yoruichi, Captain of the 2nd Division, Rose, Captain of the 3rd Division, Unohana, Ginrei Kuchiki, Captain of the 6th Division and Byakuya's grandfather, Love, Kyōraku, Kensei, Captain of the 9th Division, and Ukitake are also present. Then the new Captain of the 12th Division, Kisuke Urahara, makes his entrance. Seeing the character, Shinji isn't too impressed, thinking they've inherited a champion. The following night, he goes to visit Urahara and tells him why Hiyori is causing him problems: she admired her former captain like her mother. Shinji went on to give him advice on how best to become a captain. He thinks that Urahara is not the type to do what others tell him anyway, and to be especially unaffected by the feelings of his subordinates. As he leaves, he notices that he is being spied on and breaks a camouflage spell in which Aizen was hiding. Aizen, surprised, asks his captain how long he had been spotting him. Shinji, cold and scornful, retorts: "Since you were in your mother's womb". Then he orders Shinji to follow him.

Nine years later, Shinji and Aizen are strolling around the Seireitei when they come across Urahara, Hiyori and 12th Division lieutenant Mayuri Kurotsuchi. As Shinji once again engages in a childish brawl with Hiyori, Aizen asks Urahara if he's heard the famous news, to which Urahara tells him no. Shinji then picks up the story and tells him about the rumor of a series of strange deaths in Rukongai. Shinji also informs him that the 9th Division has been sent to handle the investigation. The following night, Shinji is sent to Rukongai with Love, Rose, Lisa and Hachigen, the second-in-command of the Necromancer Corps, to rescue the 9th Division investigation team and Hiyori, sent by Urahara to assist the investigation team. When he arrives on the scene, he has to defend Hiyori from a totally Hollowmorphosed Kensei. The rest of the rescue team soon arrive and are stunned to see that Kensei looks more like a Hollow than a Shinigami. Quickly unsheathing their swords, Love begins to confront Kensei, then Hiyori begs them to stop fighting because it was Kensei before starting to cough. Shinji told her to shut up because they had to stop it, especially if it was Kensei.

Mashiro, also Hollowmorphosed, then appeared behind Rose and suddenly attacked her. Shinji calls out to her so that her attention is directed to him. She moves towards him and attacks, but he blocks her. He is helped by the intervention of Hachi, who uses Bakudō #75 - "Gochūtekkan" to immobilize her. Hachi then takes charge of immobilizing Kensei with Bakudō #63 "Sajō Sabaku" to restrain him too. He then asked Shinji what was going on and what had happened to Mashiro and Kensei, but they were soon interrupted by Kensei breaking his chains. As the latter attacks everyone again, Hachi takes the opportunity to use Bakudō #99. "Kin" to finally immobilize Kensei. Impressed, Shinji compliments Hachi on using a level 99 spell without incantation. Shinji then asked Hachi if he could heal Kensei and Mashiro with the Kidō, but Hachi retorts that he can't if he doesn't know what the problem is. Suddenly, Hiyori starts coughing uncontrollably and asks Shinji to let her go.

Hiyori then Hollowmorphoses and violently attacks Shinji's torso, to everyone's surprise. Suddenly, a zone of darkness falls over everyone, and they are all struck by an invisible assailant. Once the darkness lifts, Shinji is the last to be conscious and sees that the assailant is none other than Tōsen, the 5th officer of the 9th Division. Asking him how he could have betrayed his captain, it's at this moment that Aizen, accompanied by Gin, appears and tells him that Kaname only followed his orders. Shinji isn't really surprised to see his Vice-Captain, revealing that he knew he was shady and untrustworthy. He adds that it was to keep an eye on him that he had him appointed as his Vice-Captain. Aizen then retorts that he is grateful for this, as his captain's distrust has allowed him to act freely. He adds that for the past month, Shinji hasn't noticed that the person walking behind him in public wasn't Aizen. He then begins to explain the power of his Zanpakutō, Kyōka Suigetsu and chides his captain that if he had been closer to him, in the same way that other captains are to their vice-captains, he would have been able to detect the subtle differences between him and the man who had been pretending to be him for a month.

It was his lack of trust that prevented them from approaching each other and, as such, made it easier for Aizen to deceive Shinji. He adds that he could also have refused to become vice-captain, but accepted because Shinji's distrust made the position ideal for carrying out his plans. Finally, Aizen ironizes the situation and accuses his captain of being responsible for the current fate of his comrades. At his words, Shinji loses his temper and causes his Hollowmorphosis process to accelerate. Shinji then asks Aizen what Hollowmorphosis is, but Aizen refuses to say more. He then orders Tōsen to finish everyone off and, after Hiyori is attacked, Shinji confronts Tōsen. Totally bewildered, Shinji remembers Aizen's words about his anger which speeds up the process and regains his composure. Quickly gaining the upper hand on Tōsen, he sends him crashing to the ground, but the Hollowmorphosis process eventually gets the better of the captain, who collapses.

Just as Aizen is about to finish off Shinji, Urahara and Tessai, the commander of the Necromancer Corps arrive as reinforcements to rescue him and the others. Aizen and his subordinates take advantage of Urahara's presence to escape, and Tessai uses a forbidden Kidō to preserve and transport the eight officers to the 12th Division barracks. In his laboratory, Urahara tried to reverse the process using an object of his own invention, the Hōgyoku. Unfortunately, this ended in failure, not having the effect he expected. The following day, Urahara and Tessai were arrested under the orders of Central 46. The 8 officers were sentenced for their Hollowmorphosis. However, before either sentence can be carried out, Urahara and Tessai are rescued by Yoruichi, who has taken them to her hideout. There, she also brought Shinji and the others, as well as the prototype of the new Gigai on which Urahara was working. He then decided to make ten Gigai for Shinji, Love, Rose, Kensei, Mashiro, Hachigen, Lisa, Hiyori, Tessai and himself, so that they could escape into the Real World undetected. Yoruichi, meanwhile, performed a metamorphosis technique to transform herself into a cat. The 11 officers then left for the Real World. Shinji and the 7 other Hollowmorph officers decided to stay together to control their new nature. They formed a group: the Vizards.

History

The Arrancars arch

Shinji appears for the first time, floating discreetly upside down in the sky, just above Ichigo as he talks to Orihime and Chad after defeating a Hollow. Wanting to make contact with the Shinigami, Shinji disguises himself as a student and joins Karakura High School. Reporting to Ichigo's class the next morning, he writes his name backwards on the blackboard, saying he's very good at doing things backwards. He then sits down next to Ichigo and introduces himself, saying he wants to become his buddy. The following night, when Ichigo goes to fight another Hollow, he meets Zennosuke Kurumadani, the Shinigami sent to replace Rukia. Shinji approaches Ichigo from behind and attacks him by surprise. Ichigo parries the attack and notices that his assailant is Shinji and that he possesses a Zanpakutō. Asking him who he is, Shinji tells him to keep quiet because those with spiritual pressure like his can't afford to lose their cool, otherwise they risk being easily discovered. Ichigo asks who he's referring to, to which Shinji implicitly retorts that he's talking about himself.

Shinji then notices the arrival of several Hollows, including Grand Fisher, all because Ichigo isn't careful about using his spiritual power. On the other hand, Ichigo is more concerned about Shinji's true identity. Shinji shows him a Hollow mask, revealing that like Shinji, he is able to use both Shinigami and Hollow powers, making him a Vizard. He then asks Ichigo to join his side, as he no longer belongs with the Shinigami. Their conversation is then interrupted by incredibly powerful spiritual pressure from someone neither Shinji nor Ichigo can identify. Ichigo decides to leave to find out where this spiritual pressure belongs, much to Shinji's surprise. Shinji asks Ichigo where he's going, as they haven't finished talking yet. The substitute shinigamu tells him that he refuses his offer and that he doesn't care who the Vizards are, but that he doesn't want to be one of them because he's a Shinigami and certainly not one of them. After Ichigo leaves, Shinji's cell phone rings and he tells Hiyori that he has failed in his mission to recruit Ichigo, prompting her to yell at him, but Shinji calms her down, reminding her that it's only a matter of time before Ichigo accepts his offer.

The next morning, Shinji turns up at school and greets Ichigo as if nothing had happened the night before. When Orihime greets Shinji, he goes to hug her, causing some of his classmates to become alarmed at what they perceive to be unwarranted advances. Ichigo grabs Shinji and drags him out into the yard so they can talk. Ichigo yells at him for appearing at school after saying no to his attempt to recruit him. Shinji makes it clear that he's not going to give up after just two days, saying that he's very persistent and will keep bugging him until he's convinced. He then adds that it's too late for Ichigo, as he's already a Vizard and can't go back to being a mere shinigami. He goes on to tell him that all his friends are in danger from the Hollow inside him, and that it's growing more powerful by the day. He then repeats his invitation to join his group so that he can help him.
On his way home, Shinji is suddenly attacked by Hiyori. She then hits him with her sandal and yells at him for not having succeeded in his mission. The two are then interrupted by the arrival of Orihime and Chad, who were looking for Shinji. When Orihime asks Shinji who he really is and what he wants from Ichigo, Hiyori implicitly replies that they won't tell him anything and introduces herself. Jealous of Orihime's pretty name and her body, she prepares to draw, but Shinji forcibly takes her with him. All the while, she screams and argues with him, prompting him to punish her in a very uncomfortable way. Hiyori finally calms down and admits she hates humans and Shinigami. Shinji tells her that he already knows all this, which is why he went to enlist Ichigo and told him to wait for him to come to them.

When Ichigo decides to finally show up at the Vizards' warehouse, Shinji admits that he's surprised Ichigo was able to find them considering how bad he is at feeling spiritual pressure, but then admits that he and his group deliberately released Reiatsu in order to make his job easier. When Shinji asks if he's come to join them, Ichigo then tells him that he has no intention of joining them and has only come to "use" them so that they can tell him how to control his inner Hollow. Amused, Shinji asks how he intends to do this and Ichigo retorts that it will be by force as he transforms into a shinigami and attacks Shinji. The two begin to fight. After a few exchanges, Hiyori attacks Shinji, sending him crashing into a wall. She then tells Ichigo that he will join their power group. As Hiyori gains the upper hand, Ichigo loses consciousness and the inner Hollow takes possession of his body. He then savagely attacks Hiyori, only just saved by the intervention of the other Vizards. Asking Hiyori if she's satisfied, Shinji tells Ichigo that he's welcome to join their group. Adding that the Inner Hollow is not something you can subjugate with your mind, body or mere thought, he assures Ichigo that they will help him control it. Later, Shinji waits with the other Vizards as Ichigo trains on an exercise machine, with Hiyori as his personal trainer. Ichigo then starts to get angry about the machine and throws it at Hiyori.

Shinji then tells Ichigo that Hiyori's exercise machine is the basis of his future training, as they will decide that the level of his future training will be determined by how long he can last on it. He further explains that they will teach him to control his Hollow when he is able to use the machine for three consecutive days. Ichigo becomes irritated and retorts that he has understood that the machine absorbs spiritual energy. He then goes on to say that it's all pointless because he doesn't have time to play with them. Shinji then yells at him to shut up, then tells him that he's gotten pretty big for someone who doesn't know how long it takes the Hōgyoku to wake up. This surprises Ichigo, but Shinji tells him that the shinigami knows nothing about Hōgyoku or Hollowmorphosis and should therefore stop complaining. Ichigo asks how he knows all this, to which Shinji explains that he knows all about the Hōgyoku, Arrancars or even Sōsuke Aizen, whom he has known for many years. Shinji stealthily approaches Ichigo and puts his hand on his face, telling him that the story will have to wait for another time and declares that he thinks it's time to get down to business before putting Ichigo to sleep. Shinji then asks Hachigen to erect a double barrier around the warehouse. He then tells an unconscious Ichigo that he is about to face his Hollow, asking him not to be devoured by it and that he must consume it, adding that if he is defeated, it will all be over for him.

Shinji takes Ichigo to his underground training area, accompanied by the other Vizards. Shinji then tells Hachi to set up a barrier here too and seal off Ichigo's movements. Hachi then uses Bakudō #75 - "Gochūtekkan". This technique soon collapses and Shinji warns the others that the Hollow has awakened. While Ichigo confronts his Hollow inside his mind, the Vizards are tasked with confronting the Hollow inside the barrier. Lisa enters first to fight him, and Shinji tells her not to kill Ichigo, to which she replies that this assumes he won't kill her first. After her fight, Lisa asks Shinji how long Ichigo has been inside her mind. Shinji tells her it's been over an hour. Finally, Ichigo's Hollow begins to dissipate, revealing that Ichigo has won before collapsing from exhaustion. Shinji then asks him if he's all right, to which Ichigo replies that he's not feeling too bad. Later, while Ichigo is training, Hachi comments on how Ichigo hasn't really extended the duration as he can barely hold his mask on for more than a few seconds. Shinji tells him it's not that simple. Just then, Hachi detects that someone has broken through his barrier, surprising the other Vizards too. Orihime introduces herself to them, and they are shocked that a mere human could accomplish such a feat. Shortly after Orihime's departure, the other Vizards ask Shinji who she is, until Shinji tells them that she is his first love. Lisa reminds him that he says this to all the pretty girls and even said it once about her. Later, shortly after eating, Shinji asks Hiyori how training is going and she says it's not going too well as Ichigo hasn't accomplished anything special yet.

When several Espadas come to the Real World, Ichigo senses Grimmjow's presence and rushes to fight him. He is held back by Kensei and Love, but Shinji tells them to let him go. Shinji then saves Ichigo and Rukia from a Cero by former Espada nº6 after the latter has defeated them both. Shinji says he hates getting involved in Shinigami fights, but concedes that when you hear the sound of fighting next door, you simply can't ignore it. When Grimmjow asks him who he is, Shinji tells him it doesn't matter and Grimmjow begins to attack him, who declares his intention to kill him. Dodging all the attacks, Shinji realizes how violent Grimmjow is, and that the fight is destroying everything around them. It's then that Shinji decides to put on his Hollow mask, surprising Grimmjow who is quickly overpowered by the Vizard. Shinji then fires a Cero at Arrancar, who then crashes to the ground. Shinji then tells him that he knows Grimmjow has minimized the damage of his Cero by firing his own Cero. Grimmjow, furious, draws his saber and starts to unleash his Zanpakutō, but Ulquiorra Cifer stops the Arrancar before he can, telling him they've accomplished their mission.

Hirako Shinji - BLEACH - Wallpaper #49980 - Zerochan Anime Image Board | Bleach manga, Anime, Bleach characters

Some time later, Mashiro brings a parcel sent by Ichigo to their door. Ichigo had sent his bandages to the Vizards with a note: "Thank you". Shinji then realizes that Ichigo has gone to Hueco Mundo and calls him a moron.

Around the same time that Aizen, Gin, Tōsen and the first three Espadas invade the fake city of Karakura, Shinji remembers how Urahara became captain and how the Vizards were subjected to Aizen's Hollowmorphosis experiments. He then asserts that they owe Urahara a debt, and that they also have a score to settle with Aizen. Afterwards, Shinji and the rest of the group leave their lair, armed and ready for battle.

Shinji and the rest of the Vizards later arrive in the fake city of Karakura, precisely at the moment when Aizen manages to free himself from the prison of flames launched by Yamamoto. Asking her comrades if there's anyone in Gotei 13 they'd like to talk to, only Lisa leaves to find her former captain, Kyōraku. Meanwhile, Shinji leaves to say hello to the Captain General. He tells him that he's here to defeat Aizen and that he has no reason to blame him or Gotei 13 for what happened 100 years ago. He thanks Sasakibe for allowing them into the forcefield before Yamamoto asks if the Vizards are their allies. Shinji retorts that they are not. They are only Aizen's enemies, before adding that they are Ichigo's allies. He then returns to the other Vizards, telling them to get ready for battle, as it's only a matter of time before it starts again. Just then, Fūra spits out a whole horde of Gillians, ready to devastate everything. Shinji and the other Vizards put on their masks and head into battle.

While the rest of the Vizards finish defeating the Menos Grande, Shinji heads for Aizen to challenge him to a duel and removes his Hollow mask before attacking him. However, he dodges a surprise attack from Tōsen in extremis, who manages to cut him above his left eye. The former 9th Division captain is about to attack Shinji again when suddenly Komamura steps in. Gotei 13 and the Vizards then unite to defeat the 3 Espadas, Komamura and Hisagi face Tōsen and finally, Kensei and Mashiro confront Wonderweiss and Fūra. Meanwhile, Shinji is confronted by Gin. After the defeats of Baraggan and then Stark, Aizen gets rid of Halibel himself and calls Gin and Tōsen to finish it off.

Shinji appears near Hiyori and tells her and the others that it would be best not to rush near Aizen, explaining that with his abilities, they will be defeated. Hiyori tells her that they know this for a fact, but Shinji tells her that he's talking to her in particular. Aizen then begins to mock the Vizards, declaring that no matter what they do, the end will always be the same, as their fate had already been decided. Shinji tells Hiyori not to listen, as he's only trying to provoke her. Aizen goes on to declare that they have nothing more to fear, since they all died that night 100 years ago. These words send Hiyori into a rage, and she charges at the renegade Shinigami. Shinji yells at her to stop, but before she can reach Aizen, Gin Ichimaru slices her in half with his Zanpakutō. Shinji then cries out in despair and immediately grabs Hiyori's mortally wounded upper half. Hiyori, in tears, apologizes to Shinji for having been unable to resist such a provocation. Shinji calls Hachi to heal her, but when he realizes that he only has one arm left, he instantly remembers that Orihime has exceptional healing abilities. He wonders how long it will be before Ichigo arrives.

Shinji, still holding Hiyori, looks at Aizen with fury. Aizen comments on Shinji's look, telling him that he has finally woken up after 100 years of sleep. Aizen mocks his former captain and offers to face him, promising to draw his sword especially for him. Shinji then calls Hachi, telling him he's sorry because he knows he only has one arm, but that he must take care of Hiyori or at least keep her safe until Ichigo returns. Shinji then faces Aizen, who is amused that he has so much confidence in Ichigo. Shinji retorts that he doesn't expect him to understand, as he doesn't even trust his own subordinates. Aizen then explains that trusting someone is tantamount to relying on them, and that this is the behavior of a weakling, something he dispenses with. Shinji wonders how he can have such a philosophy with all the subordinates he's had to convince to trust him. Aizen corrects him, telling him that he did tell his subordinates to follow him, but never to trust him. On the contrary, Aizen always told them not to trust anyone, including himself. He adds that, unfortunately, few people are strong enough not to, explaining that everyone looks for a superior figure to obey and that this figure, in turn, will look for someone superior to them to submit to. This is how all kings are born. This is how all gods are born. He ended his speech by telling Shinji not to believe in him yet, for he would show him the god to have faith in.

Moments later, Aizen finally draws his sword. Shinji comments on Aizen's slow draw and asks him if he's afraid. Seeing that Aizen doesn't answer, Shinji then declares that there's no point in ignoring him, because no matter how strong he is, he must always be wary. He then quotes Aizen's own words from 100 years ago, about how Shinji had never opened up to him, said anything to him or even tried to get to know him. He then adds that because of this, Aizen has no idea of the power of his Zanpakutō. Amused, Aizen asks him if he should fear his former captain's abilities. The latter then tells Aizen that his Kyōka Suigetsu is not the only Zanpakutō with the ability to absolutely control the senses of others. He then releases his Zanpakutō, Sakanade.

Seeing the shape of Shinji's Shikai, Aizen can't help but comment that this is an interesting shape for a katana. Shinji replies that it's great, but that he won't lend it to him. Aizen then states that he finds nothing strange about his senses, wondering if Shinji misspoke about him being able to control all five senses. Shinji tells him to take another look as he's already under his influence, insisting on the intoxicating scent of his Shikai. Adding to Aizen that it's too late, he welcomes him into the inverted world. Much to Aizen's surprise, he now appears to be standing upside down in the air. Shinji then explains that Aizen's senses have been reversed. The Vizard attacks him and Aizen turns around, having realized that front and back have been reversed. Shinji seems surprised, but the Arrancar leader is then wounded. Adding that the look and direction of the attack are also reversed, Shinji declares that no matter how powerful he is, his body will always fight by reflex from what he sees. Attacking Aizen again, Shinji is surprised to see that he has missed. The Arrancar leader then realizes that Sakanade's ability is nothing more than an optical illusion and seems particularly disappointed. Shinji then realizes that he has been cut on the back by Aizen, which surprises him. The renegade captain then declares that compared to Kyōka Suigetsu, who truly controls all five senses, Shinji's ability is nothing more than child's play.

The next moment, the sky shatters and Ichigo suddenly emerges from the Garganta and attacks Aizen with a Getsuga Tenshō. However, the attack is countered by a powerful protective barrier. After Aizen fails to provoke Ichigo, thanks to Komamura's intervention, Shinji and the other Captains and Vizards still able to fight decide to fight Aizen together, in order to prevent Ichigo from seeing Kyōka Suigetsu's release. After Komamura attacks Aizen, Shinji asks Ichigo why he didn't bring Orihime back with him, as she would be able to heal everyone to help fight Aizen. However, he notices that Ichigo has returned with Unohana and declares that she was probably a better choice for this battle anyway. He then decides to enter the battle, alongside Love, Rose and Lisa.

Aizen easily defeats Komamura, Rose, Love and Lisa, before starting a duel against Soi Fon. Seeing that the latter has split into two, Aizen begins to draw his Zanpakutō, but his sword and arm are immediately encased in ice, much to Soi Fon's surprise. Before he can react, Soi Fon stabs him in the chest with Suzumebachi, quoting the name of his technique, death in two pricks. With that, Aizen notes that it's an interesting technique, but that it can't harm him because of his vastly superior Reiatsu. Aizen is then wounded by an attack from a shadow and understands that Kyōraku got him with Kageoni, as his shadow is on Hitsugaya's ice. The latter, telling him it's over, rushes at him, helped by Shinji who has released his Shikai to disrupt Aizen's perception, who finds himself stabbed by the 10th Captain's saber. Thinking he's done with Aizen, Shinji begins to turn to Gin. But to everyone's horror, Kyōka Suigetsu's illusion shatters, revealing that it is actually Hinamori who has been stabbed by Hitsugaya. Aizen takes this opportunity to injure Kira and Iba, before revealing to Shinji that Kyōka Suigetsu has been active all along. Hitsugaya, in a rage, charges at Aizen, breaking their formation. The renegade captain soon slices him in two. Soi Fon, Kyōraku and Shinji try to take him down but are, in the space of just a few seconds, all sliced up by Aizen, who defeats the entire coalition of captains and Vizards in the process. As they fall into the city below, Aizen declares that he will not kill them, and that the wounds they have sustained will allow them to watch helplessly the outcome of the battle.

Later, as the wounded are being tended to, Unohana finishes her treatment on Hiyori. Lisa asks if she'll pull through, and Unohana declares that she'll wake up as long as she has the will to live. Unohana goes on to say that it would be more appropriate to ask Shinji if she will give up or not. As Unohana leaves, Shinji tells her that he owes her one, and the captain says that she needs no thanks for saving her allies' lives, to which Shinji remarks that they aren't. After thinking about what Hiyori would say at this point, Shinji says thank you to Unohana again.

Bow of the missing replacement Shinigam

When Ichigo regains his powers, he notices that Shinji's Reiatsu, among other things, has been used to help restore his own. Later, when Ichigo goes to Soul Society to bring Kūgo Ginjō's body back to the Real World, Shinji, now the captain of the 5th Division again since the battle of Karakura, wonders if this is the right thing to do, asking if Ichigo can forgive Kūgo for what he's done. But seeing that Ichigo's aim is not to forgive, he smiles and lets the captains' meeting end.

Bleach: Thousand-Year Blood War

Shinji attends the funeral of fallen Vice-Captain Sasakibe. He is then summoned to the 1st Division quarters for a council of Captains. After receiving confirmation that their enemies were Quincys, Yamamoto orders the captains to prepare for battle from now on. Some time later, the Vandenreich invasion of the Seireitei begins and Shinji heads into battle, followed by Hinamori. Learning that several captains have had their Bankai stolen, Shinji laments his colleagues' situation, calling them fools. Later, when Yamamoto goes berserk and his Reiatsu echoes throughout the Seireitei, Hinamori notes that this is the first time she's seen him angry. Shinji points out that it's the first time for him too, and that it's also the first time he's seen him fight on the front line. He adds that they must hurry, otherwise they won't have time to enjoy themselves.

Later, Shinji and the other captains are stunned by Yamamoto's death at the hands of Yhwach. When Ichigo suddenly turns up at Soul Society, Shinji and the other members of Gotei 13 are all taken aback. Once the Vandenreich has retreated, Shinji has sustained no major injuries and informs Ichigo that Rukia and Renji have emerged from the operating room and are being taken to the 4th Division's intensive care unit. He congratulates Ichigo, reminding him that it was thanks to his arrival that Yhwach retreated. Once Ichigo has left, Rukia asks Shinji why he had such a sad expression, to which he thinks Ichigo blames himself for not having been able to save anyone and for having had his sword broken during the fight. Rukia, for her part, thinks that Ichigo is trying to conceal something heavier that is weighing on his heart.

Shinji then attends a gathering of the captains for Yamamoto's funeral. He remains silent as some of the other captains argue amongst themselves until Kyōraku comes to calm everyone down and remind them that the purpose of Gotei 13 is to protect Soul Society. Then, Shinji waits with the other captains for the arrival of the Royal Guard when Ichigo arrives in his turn. Shinji doesn't recommend staying to see the guard when suddenly they arrive. Seeing them, Shinji is disappointed as they look nothing like he imagined, but is then hit on the head by a plump woman, who then asks if he and Hiyori are okay. Not recognizing her, Shinji asks her name and is shocked to learn that it's Kirio Hikifune, noting that she looks nothing like she used to. Shortly afterwards, he watches Soi Fon arguing with members of the Royal Guard before seeing that Senjumaru Shutara has taken Byakuya, Rukia, Renji and Tensa Zangetsu inside spheres. already ready to leave with Ichigo.

Shinji calls Hiyori on the phone to fix the distortion between the Real World and Soul Society. Telling her that he's begging her on his knees, Hiyori retorts that he should stop making fun of her, as she knows full well that he's lying about it. Shinji, on the other hand, takes the initiative by sending her a package and telling her she's the only one who can accomplish the task before hanging up. During the second invasion of the Vandenreich, which replenishes the Seireitei through the Schatten Bereich, Shinji first witnesses Urahara's communication, which transmits a Shin'enyaku to all Bankai holders so that the Quincys can no longer steal them. After receiving one, Shinji uses it and is confronted by a whole regiment of enemy soldiers. Although he regrets that his own soldiers have died, he reveals to the Quincys that he is unfortunately unable to use certain techniques in their presence. He then unleashes his Bankai, Sakashima Yokoshima Happō Fusagari. The soldiers then start killing each other, and Shinji reveals that the power of his Bankai is to make his opponents confuse the concept of ally and enemy.

He then returns to Bambietta's position. When she tells Komamura that it's a little early for heroic effect, Shinji retorts that they're not meant to be heroes, adding that he doesn't intend to wait for them to destroy the Seireitei a before intervening. He then releases his Shikai, Sakanade, and tells Komamura to go to another front. The Stern Ritter "E" quickly suffers the effects of the inverted world and is unable to take advantage despite the damage it causes. But a stream of energy bursts from Bambietta's body. A red column of spiritual power springs up from the ground and surrounds the Stern Ritter. Hirako, surprised, asks her what it is. Bambietta explains that it's Quincy: Vollständig and that she couldn't use it because of her Bankai.
