Anyone who loves classic Marvel comic book series like X-Men, Spider-Man and Captain America is bound to adore anime and manga like One-Punch Man and Tokyo Ghoul.
There's a lot of overlap between American comics and Japanese manga, with both industries using cleverly drawn illustrations and dialogue bubbles to tell a compelling story. However, these two industries also have many differences in presentation and storytelling methods, so fans of comics or manga/anime might think they won't like the other side. Fortunately, any Marvel Comics fan is bound to enjoy a handful of Marvel-style animated series.

5/ My Hero Academia
My Hero Academia is one of the best examples of an anime series ideal for a Marvel Comics fan, as this franchise draws heavily on classic shonen manga and American comic books. My Hero Academia follows the rise of Izuku Midoriya/Deku as he trains to become the world's greatest hero and save everyone from a rising tide of villainy and crime.
But My Hero Academia isn't just a love letter to Marvel. The series also explores the tragic paradox of making professional heroes the rulers of society, since a class of superheroes necessitates the existence of villains, creating a cycle of violence and anger that never ends, even when the heroes prevail.
4/ One Punch Man
Discover our Saitama Figure |
One-Punch Man is a hilarious, subversive and deceptively profound seinen superhero anime starring the famously overpowered hero, Saitama the Caped Crusader. Saitama is in fact too strong for his own good, and desperate to find meaning in a life where he can defeat any problem with a single punch.
Like My Hero Academia , the One-Punch Man anime presents a world in which superheroes are widely accepted as the protectors of society, even if they still need secret identities, just in case. Now, Saitama is part of this heroic system and, curiously, he starts at the bottom despite his unlimited striking power.
3/ Hunter x Hunter
Discover our Lego Hisoka Figure |
Regardless of its notorious interruptions and unfinished animated adaptation, the popular Hunter x Hunter franchise is still worth a try for new anime fans who love comic-book-style characters, superpowers and intrigue. Hunter x Hunter may seem ridiculous compared to Marvel titles like Iron Man and even Spider-Man , but it has a lot of merit.
Hunter x Hunter is a deeper, darker and more brutal series than first impressions might suggest, and it's an excellent sample of what a well-written, well-animated shonen looks like. The carefree young hero Gon Freecss might remind Marvel fans of Spider-Man's personality, which makes him a real charmer.
2/ Fire Force
Fire Force may not have been directly inspired by Marvel comic book titles like My Hero Academia , but it still feels like a wonderful comic-book-style adventure and makes an excellent gateway series for new shonen fans. Characters like Shinra Kusakabe and her fellow firefighters are sure to delight Marvel fans with their incredible flame-based fighting system, and this fighting style is much deeper and more nuanced than it first appears.
Fire Force's cheerful, cartoonish atmosphere should be welcoming to fans of Marvel animated titles, with zany humor, terrific action sequences and a fascinating near-future setting. The anime could also attract fans with its intriguing plot concerning the Ashen Flame cult and its shady plot to recreate the world in an apocalyptic fire.
1/ Fullmetal Alchemist : Brotherhood
Discover our Edward & Alphonse Elric Figure |
The acclaimed Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood is an outstanding gateway anime for any new fan, and will appeal to comic book fans too. Like any good comic, FMA: Brotherhood features an exciting supernatural battle system, vibrant main characters and stylish villains, all with a superb plot to keep things moving.
FMA: Brotherhood is set in the steampunk world of Amestris, where centuries-old plots are underway to remake the entire world, so that a new god can be born. In the midst of it all are protagonist Edward Elric and his brother Alphonse, seeking to restore their bodies after an experiment gone wrong - and they're unwitting pawns in a plan much bigger than themselves.
