Audiences continue to return to Dragon Ball because of its daring battles, surprising storytelling and formidable transformations. However, Dragon Ball also boasts a memorable cast of characters, notably Goku and Vegeta, who have become icons of shonen anime.

The ongoing rivalry between Goku and Vegeta is one of the series' most satisfying dynamics. Goku and Vegeta are fun characters, whether they're friends or foes, and there's always an animated debate about who's stronger. Goku may be Dragon Ball's main character, but the evidence suggests that he will probably never defeat Vegeta.

5/ Because Ultra Ego has greater potential than Ultra Instinct

Much of Dragon Ball has followed Vegeta's motivated attempts to reach Goku's Super Saiyan milestones, including his impromptu transformation into Ultra Instinct during the Tournament of Power. Vegeta's difficulties on this front prompted him to forge his own original path that drew on his personal strengths rather than matching Goku's criteria.

Vegeta's Ultra Ego is an aggressive alternative to Ultra Instinct that actively feeds on his anger. Ultra Ego Vegeta grows stronger the more damage it takes. There seems to be no limit to its potential, whereas Ultra Instinct is a more capricious and psychological transformation, although it has impressive advantages such as its massive energy avatar.

4/ Goku needs someone stronger to motivate him to work harder

Goku and Vegeta have two very different philosophies when it comes to their quest for power. Vegeta wants to be the strongest and will apparently do whatever it takes to achieve this goal. Conversely, Goku is looking for a worthy opponent who will give him a satisfying fight and push him to work harder.

Winning would be nice for Goku, but he's just as happy to be challenged. It's not in his interest to be the strongest, because he needs that impetus to work harder.

3/ Goku is less ruthless and violent

Strength is more than just raw power, and an individual's fighting style and personal philosophies can play an equally important role in his success. Goku is inherently kind, sometimes to a fault, and lacks the vicious cruelty that once defined Vegeta.

Goku is content to beat someone without delivering the fatal blow, while Vegeta celebrates the opportunity to exterminate his opponent. Goku lacks the killer instinct that is sometimes necessary in battle, and this could very well become the deciding factor between success and failure against Vegeta.

2/ Vegeta is ready to let himself be possessed or to succumb to the darkness in order to become stronger.

Vegeta has made enormous progress as a character. However, he begins Dragon Ball Z as a villain, and there have been several occasions when he has returned to the dark side, albeit through malicious manipulation.

A crucial difference between Goku and Vegeta is that the latter is more than willing to turn to dark means to gain more power, even if he loses control of himself in the process. It's a line Goku won't cross, which would give Vegeta the edge should he ever find himself in this situation again.

1/ Vegeta has won all his past fights

It's easy to think of Goku as Vegeta's perpetual superior. However, the handful of battles between these two actually present Vegeta as the victor. Majin Vegeta's battle with Super Saiyan 2 Goku and their skirmish in Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero both end in victories for Vegeta.

Sure, Vegeta loses in the Saiyan Saga assault, but this victory has much more to do with the support of Gohan, Krillin and Yajirobe than simply being Goku's victory. It may be a trivial detail, but past battle data suggests that Vegeta will defeat Goku if they are ever engaged in combat together.
