While walking through a cemetery to take a shortcut, the young high school student Manta Oyamada discovers that he has the ability to see and hear ghosts that have not yet reached the afterlife. His surprise doesn't end there, as he meets Yoh Asakura, another young boy with a nonchalant look who turns out to be a Shaman.

With the surprise effect over, Manta accepts his new sensory abilities and becomes Yoh's companion. Yoh's abilities allow him to communicate with the spirits and to help them when they need it: by lending them his carnal envelope, Yoh acquires their powers and sometimes offers them the possibility of accomplishing an act of which death deprived them.

This is how he will give back confidence to a young boxer that the death of his trainer had plunged in debauchery and delinquency. Yoh is therefore the one who flies to the rescue of souls in pain. His goal is to become one day Shaman King, this particular shaman able to enter in a perfect communion with nature and its spirits. It is a unique and highly coveted gift. To achieve this, he will have to train hard and face other Shamans and their spirits whose motives are not as noble.
